What is the Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative?

Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative (CAI) is a network of Canadian families formed to raise greater awareness of the realities Canadians with severe allergies face every day. Their primary goal is to urge Parliamentarians and federal officials to respond to allergy concerns involving public awareness and education, food safety, transportation, and research; with an ultimate goal to reduce the risks of preventable anaphylactic attacks throughout Canada.

The CAI has made progress by working closely with MP Dean Allison in raising awareness with his Parliamentary colleagues. The Niagara West – Glanbrook MP has Motion M-230 in the House of Commons which reads: That in the opinion of the House, anaphylaxis is a serious concern for an increasing number of Canadians and the government should take the appropriate measures necessary to ensure these Canadians are able to maintain a high quality of life.

Nuts everywhere !?!

Avoiding Milk Protein has found an alarming number of industrial products containing nuts. Instead of sand blasting buildings with sand some companies are using walnut shells, a possible airborne hazard for those with nut allergies.

Spray tans using walnut shells are also being used in some spas. Peanut fuel is an old bio fuel that does appear from time to time, even today. Another strange use for nuts, are mixing walnut shells with pool deck paint instead of sand to prevent slipping around the pool deck.

Crushed almond shells are even being used to manufacture building supplies. Some companies are experimenting with peanut and other tree nut shells in water purification.

Little is known about if the allergen proteins are still in these products.

Imagine a nut allergic chimney sweeper being called to clean a chimney or stove only to find out from a reaction that fire logs made from tree nuts were recently used in the chimney, or a stove was powered by peanut pellets, these products are currently being sold and used.

The CAI’s mission is to prompt the federal government to develop a strategic plan to decrease the risks for Canadians living with anaphylaxis (severe, life-threatening allergies) and to educate the public.

About the Debate
MP Dean Allison and other speakers for the hour debate are identified and all are favourable to the motion. It is intended with the House exchange that useful facts and information can be put on record. Monday's Hansard transcript will be used to prompt further Parliamentary activities that support Canadian individuals and families living with anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis Awareness in the Community - A Decade of Progress & A Future of Hope

Registration is now open for Anaphylaxis Canada's 4th annual community conference which will be held this year at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, on Saturday, May 7th, 2011.

The conference will focus on effectively managing the psycho-social aspects of living with food allergies and will provide attendees with useful tools and resources, as well as updates on the latest food allergy research. Come hear from some of Canada's top allergy researchers and policy makers.

Food Labelling

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, and Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Orléans, announced regulations to strengthen Canada's labelling of food allergens and gluten sources. This means that Canadians with food allergies, sensitivities and celiac disease will soon be able to make more informed choices about the foods they buy. The Ministers also unveiled what the food label will now look like.

"Our Government is committed to protecting children and families from dangerous products, and this is clear from the measures we have taken in our new Consumer Product Safety Act," said Minister Aglukkaq. "All parents want to have confidence in the food they are serving their families, and these changes to food labels will make it easier for parents of children with food allergies to identify potentially harmful, if not fatal, ingredients in foods."

The new regulations will require additional labelling and strengthen the labelling requirements to require clearer language and the declaration of otherwise "hidden" allergens, gluten sources, and sulphites.

Because of the complexity of the changes and the shelf-life of foods, industry has been given 18 months to implement the new allergen labelling regulations. The coming into force date is set for August 4, 2012.

OTTAWA, January 19, 2011 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Thrifty Foods are warning people with allergies to peanuts not to consume the chocolate chip cookies described below. The affected product contains peanuts which are not declared on the label.

The affected product is in-store baked Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies incorrectly labelled as Chocolate Chip Cookies. The cookies were sold in 500 g packages bearing UPC 0 74147 66187 5 and a Best Before date of 11.JAN.25, (January 25, 2011).

This product was sold at Thrifty Foods, 2662 Austin Avenue, Coquitlam, British Columbia.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Consumption of this product may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to peanuts.

The manufacturer, Thrifty Foods, 2662 Austin Avenue, Coquitlam, British Columbia, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Teens and Anaphylaxis

Today, Anaphylaxis Canada announced the launch of their Why Risk It? Teen Video Series. This project is one of the key initiatives undertaken by the Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) which is made up of 23 teens and young adults from across Canada, ranging in age from 15 to 23 years. This group is responsible for providing input and direction on the youth program, which is geared towards offering resources and support to the most at-risk group for anaphylaxis: pre-teens, teens, and young adults.

The Teen Video Series is a collection of five short clips dealing with common social situations faced by teens:

Food Allergies and High School
Dining Out with Food Allergies
Eating Safely with Food Allergies
Travelling with Food Allergies

Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative Update

Cindy Paskey, Chris George, Debbie Bruce, Mindi Ferkul have updated us on the Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative....

There has been much activity supporting Anaphylaxis Motion 546* over the summer/fall months. Following the Anaphylaxis Canada e-blast that informed Registrants of this Canadian campaign, we are receiving expressions of interest, questions, and increased support from people across Canada. Thank you!

Expertise with Advocacy and Political Campaigns

This Canadian Campaign has the advantage of expert guidance and years of successful experience. The work of our Team is being led by NAS K member Chris George. Chris is the President of CG&A COMMUNICATIONS, a public relations firm specializing in advocacy campaigns, issue management and wordsmith services. Chris’s focus of work includes strategic communications counsel and campaign management, corporate positioning, and media and government relations.

Background

Motion 546 is intentionally vague. There's quite a process to go through, during which parliamentary Motions are researched and approved by government officials. Motion 546 was first introduced in 2007 by MP Rick Dykstra. At that time, considerable attention and research were devoted to creating a Motion that was acceptable for introduction. In 2007 there was no coordinated effort to move the Motion forward.

Earlier this year, some NASK and Mississauga Anaphylaxis Group members met with MP’s to discuss the CTA ruling and Air Canada’s response. Rather than a one-issue focus, the discussion evolved into re-introducing the 2007 Motion. MP Rick Dkystra, because of his current appointments, was precluded from re-introducing the Motion. His colleague, MP Dean Allison, agreed to do so. Rick and Dean are working together.

Strategically, the 'umbrella' Motion lets you personalize your reason for writing and meeting with your MP. You can describe challenges you and your family face, ask for support and personalize the impact this Motion will have on the lives of people you love. First hand knowledge, personal faces and stories of their constituents gained by MP's allows them to speak to the issues with recollection and understanding during discussions 'on the hill'.

Support

Every MP has received a letter from NASK, outlining the Campaign and asking for a response.

Constituents, also, contacted their MP’s – though, more MP contact is required.

Many MP’s have responded. Those that have indicated unwavering support will be actively engaged in future discussions.

We truly appreciate support received to date. Allergic Living included a notice in their Fall 2010 issue, p. 53, and on their Facebook page. AAIA and several other websites and bloggers have brought attention to this federal initiative. Anaphylaxis Canada sent an e-blast informing Registrants of the Motion. Thanks to personal efforts of various people, the City of Vaughan and the Regional Municipality of Niagara have passed Motions and written letters of support to the Prime Minister and other MP’s. Deputations are being made to other municipal governments.

Where the Campaign is Headed

Specific 'asks' are being formulated, in consultation with MP's who have expressed commitment.

First and foremost, this initiative is a national drive to raise awareness and achieve greater attention from decision makers in Ottawa.

Ideally, there will be federal coordination of programs and services responding to anaphylaxis, rather than isolated reactions on topical issues. Strategic central planning will include targeted and general public information initiatives. For example, educating the general public and food service providers on how to recognize and respond to an anaphylaxis emergency (much like the defibrillator initiative). Imagine the ripple effect if all first aid training providers had up-to-date, accurate anaphylaxis information in their training material (which I know from first-hand experience they do NOT).

We also seek a commitment to research, better and standardized food labelling (such as standardized cautionary/'may contain' statements), and transportation regulations that more fully address the legitimate concerns of allergic passengers.

How You Can Help

The single most important thing you can do is contact your MP.

Why? Your personal stories and views matter to people you elect, and they will recall your personal stories, voices and faces during discussions with Federal colleagues.

MP’s across Canada must hear, directly, from their constituents – by meeting with them, via phone calls, emails and letters. Please contact your MP, and encourage others to do the same. MP’s must hear the personal stories and know that this initiative will make an important difference to the lives of families in their community.

Truly, we can’t emphasize personal contact with your MP enough. Signing petitions, posting Facebook messages and exchanging emails will help, but they will not substitute.

What to Expect

Not every MP will be enthusiastic in her/his response. Some will quickly identify barriers.

Other MP’s will readily see and support the positive impact increased awareness and coordinated response will bring to families living with the challenges of life threatening allergies. You know what those challenges are! Tell your MP!

We are focused on success. We will work with those allies who express support.

Call for a comprehensive approach to assist those with severe allergies

June 7, 2010 – Niagara West - Glanbrook Member of Parliament Dean Allison gave notice for a motion in the House of Commons today: That in the opinion of the House, anaphylaxis is a serious concern for an increasing number of Canadians and the government should take the appropriate measures necessary to ensure these Canadians are able to maintain a high quality of life.

Anaphylaxis is a medical condition describing people with severe, life threatening allergies. Reactions are rapid in onset and may cause death without immediate treatment. Food is the most common cause of anaphylaxis, but insect stings, medicine, latex or exercise can cause reactions. In Canada, the most common food allergens are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, shellfish, fish, sesame and wheat. Anaphylaxis has no cure, though important research and efforts to find a cure are underway. Avoidance is the required preventative measure.

The MP’s motion is welcomed by hundreds of family members of the local group Niagara Anaphylaxis Support and Knowledge (NASK). They seek to motivate support across Canada for the Niagara MP’s efforts to raise greater awareness on Parliament Hill and prompt responsible action with Government officials. NASK President Cindy Paskey explains, “As more and more Canadian families face the challenges of raising a child with one or multiple severe allergies, a coordinated, thoughtful set of government initiatives will help to raise public understanding of anaphylaxis, and provide greater safety of its children and citizens. We ask government to take steps to help to reduce the risk of unnecessary and preventable anaphylactic attacks. Everyone benefits. Medical emergencies are avoided. Lives are saved.”

Ms. Paskey adds, “Of necessity, there is a great deal of personal responsibility when living with anaphylaxis. Avoiding your allergens is the only way to stay alive. With the support of MPs and government officials, we can raise greater public understanding, promote responsible safety measures, educate people on the signs of a reaction and how to help a person in need - similar to CPR education. This coordinated government approach will lead to reducing risk and to safer environments for those living with life-threatening allergies and to those providing care and services. Canadians and our governments have successfully tackled a wide range of health concerns that has made Canada a safer, healthier, happier place to live. Anaphylaxis deserves the same attention.”

The NASK group is very optimistic about the prospects of their awareness drive given recent attention in Ottawa on anaphylaxis. Just weeks ago, the House of Commons passed a unanimous motion to recognize May as Food Allergy Awareness Month. The Canadian Transportation Agency is about to make a ruling regarding airlines’ safety protocols respecting allergies. Also, Health Canada is reviewing new food labeling regulations that highlight the importance of listing ingredients and allergy information.

Mindi Ferkul, NASK member says, “We are very thankful to Dean Allison and his commitment to this awareness drive. We will reach out to MPs and have other Canadians concerned about the government’s response to this issue reaching out to their local MPs. Through this effort with Parliamentarians, we trust we will see action from the government, from the Health Minister and Transport Minister. The Government should demonstrate positive leadership on this issue.”

Parliament's declaration of May as Food Allergy Awareness Month

Toronto, May 2010 - Anaphylaxis Canada applauds Parliament's motion recognizing Food Allergy Awareness Month and will be commemorating the occasion by promoting a number of initiatives intended to support the 1.3 million Canadians who live with food allergies. This is the first year such a month has been designated in Canada and will now be a permanently recognized occasion. Several other countries including the US, UK, Italy, New Zealand and Australia have similar declarations.

"The declaration of Food Allergy Awareness Month is a significant step in the ongoing effort to educate the public about food allergies," said Laurie Harada, Executive Director of Anaphylaxis Canada and herself the mother of a teenager with multiple food allergies. "We are thrilled that all
political parties united to support this motion."

Food allergy is a growing public health issue in Canada. More than fifty percent of Canadians know someone with a food allergy. While allergic individuals must take responsibility for their condition, awareness and support of the community are key to keeping people, especially children, safe. Without treatment, anaphylaxis, the most severe form of an allergic reaction, can cause death.

In the visitor's gallery to watch Parliament vote on the motion was allergy advocate Sara Shannon. Sara's daughter, Sabrina, had her own advocacy efforts tragically cut short by a fatal anaphylactic reaction in 2003 when she was just 13 years old.

"This means so much to me," said Sara Shannon, "and it would have meant so much to Sabrina. In her short life Sabrina experienced many parts of Canada, from the mountains of British Columbia to the beautiful city of Montreal. She would want everyone to share in this country's beauty and possibility and would therefore be very pleased that the serious issues around food allergies are getting attention from our federal lawmakers."

Anaphylaxis Canada will be recognizing Food Allergy Awareness Month through a number of planned initiatives and events. This includes the organization's annual conference, launching two key initiatives for teens and young adults: a new French version of its website especially
created for allergic teens to help them manage their food allergies more effectively; and the Sabrina Shannon Memorial Award for youth involvement in community anaphylaxis education.

Letter To Chatelaine Magazine:
As parents and supporters of children diagnosed with serious food allergies, it was with shock and dismay that we read the article 'It's Just Nuts' in the December issue. Writer Patricia Pearson presented a slanted, narrow view of a health issue that touches our hearts and lives every single day.

In her selective reporting, Ms. Pearson has taken her personal criticisms too far. We are responding in this letter [for publication] to protect our children, and so that the general public can know the truth.

As parents, we are not hysterical or neurotic; we are not over-reacting. Contrary to Chatelaine's article, the issue in schools is not peanuts, it's anaphylaxis. That severe form of allergic reaction can develop with alarming speed following the ingestion of even trace amounts of an allergy trigger. The safeguards put in place to protect our kids in schools are based on directives from medical professionals, government ministries, allergy education associations and even parents whose children don't have allergies. Principals, school nurses and parents work on an individual basis to ensure that students at risk, based on a history of severe reaction and medical testing, are accommodated appropriately. What's fair to ask of the local community is always considered.

Our fear is that Ms. Pearson's article plants seeds of doubt in the minds of those on whom we depend to help keep our kids safe. Slightly fewer than 2 per cent of kids have serious peanut allergies. Statistically that's a huge increase from a generation ago; one of the highest incidence rates in the world. When you add the children who have other life-threatening food allergies, the rate rises to 6 per cent. That's thousands and thousands of children at risk of a condition that can cause a traumatic and even fatal reaction.

Ms. Pearson seems to imply that 2 to 6 per cent of Canadian kids are not worth bothering about, not worth the trouble to keep safe. We strongly disagree. We are all of equal value in our great country.

"Most adults remember their camp days with great fondness. Children with food allergies should be able to have the same wonderful experience. As a parent, the same diligence you use when investigating your child’s school will also help you choose the right camp.

If you’re a camp director or counselor, working as a team with parents will enable you take the precautions needed to protect food-allergic campers.

For Parents
A team meeting with the staff at camp can be just as helpful as the one for school. You’ll want to include the head of food service, so you can learn about the food allergy management policies in the kitchen and see menus beforehand. You’ll also want to inquire about food policies in the bunks and during special activities. As with all professionals who care for your child, you’ll want to provide the Emergency Medical Plan and an Emergency Treatment Authorization form. Finally, you should gather the following information from the camp administration:

Has the camp had other campers with food allergies? How does it handle these campers?
Who is the medical person in charge? Is there a camp physician in residence? A nurse?
Where will the epinephrine and other medications be stored and how available will they be?
Can your child carry her own medications?
How many people will be trained in administering the epinephrine autoinjectors?
How close is the nearest emergency medical treatment center?
Does the local ambulance service have paramedics who are authorized to administer epinephrine?
Does the local ambulance service subscribe to Lifestar or another helicopter service?
Who will be trained in the administration of epinephrine?
Do camp counselors have walkie-talkies?
Are all counselors trained in CPR?
What outings may the campers be going on, and how accessible is medication or emergency treatment on these outings?

Again, be aware that camp is a very social experience, and you want your child to feel safe, not isolated. Providing enough allergen-free snacks to last throughout camp will help your child feel part of the activities. You may want to request that a counselor keep the snacks and dispense them when other children are having theirs, or that the snacks be kept in the camp’s store or canteen. Don’t forget to send enough to share!

For Camp Directors and Counselors
Camp is a time for children to explore new things and learn how to function independently away from home. While providing a safe environment for a food-allergic camper may be challenging, with coordinated teamwork among camp staff and parents, campers can feel safe and part of the fun.

Meet with parents and learn about special dietary requirements.
A food-allergic child’s parents should be able to provide a list of problem foods and appropriate substitutions. In many cases, the parents will offer to send their child’s food to make sure that only safe dishes are served. Be certain that the entire camp staff knows about these special arrangements.

Identify all food-allergic campers.
Attach a photo of the food-allergic camper to the child’s food substitution list and the Emergency Treatment Authorization form. Give copies to the kitchen staff, and be sure that all staff that will care for these campers can identify them. That includes cabin counselors and the staff who run the camp’s store/canteen.

Read ingredient labels on all foods.
There is no cure for food allergies. Reading ingredient lists on packaged foods and strictly avoiding all foods that could cause reactions is the primary treatment for food allergies. Ingredients can change without warning. Additionally, the institutional size and individual size portions of some foods have different ingredients—always read the ingredient label for each food. Some foods may state that they are dairy-free or kosher. These products may still contain milk protein and the ingredient label should be read with care. Staff should be familiar with ingredient names that may indicate common allergens, like albumin for egg and casein for milk.

The camp experience helps children grow and gain independence. It is important that cabin or bunk mates be educated at an appropriate time, in a way that does not isolate the food-allergic child or leave him open to teasing. Counselors should respect food-allergic campers’ privacy and take this up in their cabins, encouraging a partnership with a buddy who can intervene if a reaction begins. Safety should always come first—but remember, every camper wants to be one of the gang, food allergy or not."

Allergies and IBD

As many of you know, our family is touched not only touched by allergies, but also Intestinal Bowel Disease. The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) is a national not-for-profit voluntary medical research Foundation. Its mission is to find the cure for inflammatory bowel disease, a disease that affects over 200,000 Canadian men, women and children.

What strikes me when I speak to Moms of children with allergies is the similarities of their stories to ours. Yes, the health issues are different- but we all deal with the same emotions and life style changes: change of diet, read the packaging and labeling of every food item that gets put into the shopping cart, tossing out the majority of Halloween candy (not to mention the other Holidays), finding others to speak and listen to, attend educational events to hear the latest research and pray that a cure will be found one day.

I am grateful for the wonderful people I've met and relationships I've forged in the IBD and Allergy Communities across Canada. Thanks for being the courageous parents you are.... it helps me continue to be strong for my family.

2. You must be a resident of Canada and must be 13 to 18 years old.

3. All submitted designs must be original and created by the artist.

4. Artwork must be:
• on a white background
• maximum 3 colours can be used in the design
• accepted mediums: markers, pencil crayon,
computer generated, graphite
• minimum size: 6" x 8", maximum size 8" x 10"
(note: artwork may be resized to suit children's t-shirt measurements)

Artwork that does not meet these specifications will not be accepted.

5. Artwork may include a message in English.

I had the opportunity to attend the Anaphylaxis Canada Conference in Edmonton, Alberta! It was a great Conference, with many diverse speakers, resources and exhibitors to checkout. On behalf of Blue Bear Aware, I want to Thank all the delegates who dropped by our exhibit to share their stories and view our product. Being an on-line store, that component of our business we truly miss- chatting with our customers. This was also my first visit to Edmonton, so I had an opportunity to tour the city on Sunday. It is beautiful town and I loved the river meandering though the city, I just couldn't get over the flatness! (Being a West Coast gal!)

Wow- where has February gone?
Spring will soon be here, and thoughts of Easter are slowly coming to fruition.
This year the PAC at my children's school is making a concerted effort to have a fun inclusive community Easter activity rather than the traditional Easter "egg" hunt, chocolate eggs, etc. We are having the local Garden Works present a workshop on how to grow your own Easter Bunny! And the kids are thrilled. The bunny will be built in a pot with a peat head full of cat grass seed (for fur), then the kids will garnish the pot with a pompom bunny tail, ears and eyes. And throughout spring and summer they will have the fun watering and trimming the bunny's hair. For more info check out Garden Works.

Tiny study suggests peanut allergy can be overcome

An interesting read...

"Doctors in Britain are closer to finding a cure for severe nut allergies, according to a study published Friday.
A research team at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge exposed children gradually to tiny amounts of peanuts over six months to build up their tolerance.
It is the first time such a desensitization program has been used to treat a food allergy.
Four children — who risked fatal anaphylactic shock from contact with traces of peanut — took part in the study published in Allergy.
The children were initially given a dose of five milligrams but by the end were able to tolerate 880 milligrams — equal to five peanuts.
"We've shown it works. We've shown it can be done safely. Now we're at the stage where we need a larger trial and perhaps a control group, so that we can show it has a large effect," said Dr. Andy Clark, the study's lead researcher.
The research provides hope for the one in 50 young people in Britain with a nut allergy, he added.
"Every time people with a peanut allergy eat something, they're frightened that it might kill them. Our motivation was to find a treatment that would change that and give them the confidence to eat what they like," Clark told

Thirteen-year-old Carl Morris took part in the study. "I got pretty scared when I was eating things with traces of nuts, but now I can just freely explore different foods that may have killed me before,"he said.
Kate Frost is the mother of a nine-year-old boy who participated in the study. "It's very hard to describe how much of a difference it's made, not just in Michael's life, but for all of us," Frost told the BBC. "A peanut allergy affects the whole family. You can't go out to a restaurant. If your child goes to a birthday party, he takes a packed lunch."
It's estimated that more than 150,000 Canadians suffer from peanut allergies. About two per cent of people can have an anaphylactic reaction to an allergen, and peanut"
